Directions to Canaan Valley & Mountain Trail Rides
Canaan Valley is accessible from every metropolitan area surrounding West Virginia. Here are a few suggested routes. Please have a current map with you
From Baltimore, DC and Northern Virginia- Follow I-66W to I-81S and Strasburg, VA. Follow I-81S only a short distance to exit for Rt. 55W. Stay on Rt. 55W through Moorefield, WV to Petersburg, WV and on to Harman, WV. At Harman, WV take Rt. 32N to Canaan Valley. Right onto Freeland Road after passing entrance to Canaan Valley State Park.
From Richmond Virginia- Take I-64W to I-81N. Stay on I-81N to Strasburg and take Rt 55W to Harman, WV. At Harman, take Rt. 32N to Canaan Valley. Right onto Freeland Road after passing entrance to Canaan Valley State Park
From Pittsburgh PA- Take I-79 to Morgantown, WV. From Morgantown, take I-68E to rt. 42S at Friendsville, MD. Follow Rt. 42S until it intersects with Rt. 219S at McHenry, MD. Follow Rt. 219S through Oakland, MD to Thomas, WV. At Thomas, WV take Rt. 32S to Canaan Valley. Left onto Freeland Road, to Mountain Trail Rides.
From Columbus OH- take I-70E to I-79S to Morgantown, WV. At Morgantown, WV, follow I-68E to Rt. 42S. at Friendsville, MD. Follow Rt. 42S. Until it intersects with Rt. 219S at McHenry, MD. Follow Rt. 219 S through Oakland, MD to Thomas, WV. At Thomas take Rt. 32S to Canaan Valley. Left onto Freeland Road, to Mountain Trail Rides.
Alternate Route from Columbus, OH- From Columbus take Rt. 33E to Athens, OH. At Athens, take Rt. 50E to Clarksburg, WV. At Clarksburg, take I-79S to Rt. 33E at Weston, WV (exit 99). Follow Rt. 33E through Elkins, WV to Harman, follow Rt. 32N to Canaan Valley. Right onto Freeland Road after passing entrance to Canaan Valley State Park.
From Charleston, WV - Take I-79N to rt. 33E at Weston, WV (exit 99). Follow Rt. 33E through Elkins to Harman, WV. At Harman, follow Rt. 32N to Canaan valley. Right onto Freeland Road.
NOTE: When coming from the East, Rt 55W is the preferred route. Corridor "H", a nice 4 - lane road has just been completed from near the WV border all the way to Moorefield, WV.

Mountain Trail Rides is a family owned and operated business giving year-round guided horseback riding tours in beautiful Canaan Valley, West Virginia. We are located on Freeland Road in Canaan Valley, just .25 mile off of Route 32, less than five minutes from Canaan Valley Resort State Park and Timberline Four Seasons Resort. Other nearby attractions include the Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge, Blackwater Falls State Park, Spruce Knob (the highest point in West Virginia), Seneca Rocks, Seneca Caverns, Smoke Hole Caverns, the Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Scenic Railroad, Cass Scenic Railroad, the National Radio Astronomy Observatory at Greenbank, and Deep Creek Lake in Maryland. While visiting the Canaan Valley area during your vacation, honeymoon or weekend getaway, you will want to pack a lot of fun into your stay. Mountain Trail Rides are here to see that you enjoy your visit and have a safe horseback riding experience while having loads of fun! We are the largest horseback riding stable in the Canaan Valley area and take pride in our reputation for making people feel comfortable and at ease, and for having great horses and great guides. We specialize in beginners and family groups and provide pre-ride instruction regarding horse behavior and safety rules to all riders. No matter what your riding ability, and even if you’ve never ridden a horse before, you’ll find that the atmosphere is comfortable and relaxed and the scenery is breathtaking!
